Choshi is a city with a thriving soy sauce production industry, and there are many soy sauce factories within the city.
The largest and oldest of these is Yamasa Soy Sauce.
You can take a tour of the Yamasa Soy Sauce factory.
Factory tours will be closed from October 2025 due to renovations, but you can watch film screenings and other events.
For these, you must apply in advance via the website.
Applications must be made at least three days in advance.
The film explains the history of soy sauce, why soy sauce production is so popular in Choshi, and the process of making soy sauce.

The website stated that reservations were required, so I booked two weeks in advance. Even though my reservation was for the earliest time slot on a weekday morning (9:00 AM), the website showed a ▲ mark (indicating availability), so I thought it might be crowded. However, there were only six participants, including myself. I arrived at the parking lot at 8:30 AM. There's a parking lot to the left of the gate, but several vans belonging to businesses were already waiting. It seems there's also parking inside the factory, so if you go to the gate and ask the security guard, they should be able

Factory tours are by reservation only.
And they're free!!! Book early!
You even get a bottle of soy sauce on your way out.
It's about a 4-minute walk from Nakanomachi Station.
You can also walk from Choshi Station, but you should definitely check out the charming atmosphere of Nakanomachi Station!
They have small and regular size soft serve ice cream, and I got the small, but I should have gotten the regular...
You absolutely must try the regular size!
It's incredibly delicious!!

Although reservations online stated that they had to be made three days in advance, I called on the day to make a reservation, hoping they wouldn't accept me.
The tour was only an hour long, but it was packed with content. I highly recommend you take a look.
You can even learn the secret behind the character "上" in the Yamasa logo.
The elementary school-aged children received a writing pad to use to see how the soy sauce is made, and we were given enough soy sauce for everyone to use as souvenirs when we left, so we were very happy.
