Ella Rock Trailhead

A wonderful hike up the mountain. The terrain along the trail is fine even for older people. If you take the shortcut, the terrain is more challenging. The view is amazing, but I recommend setting out early in the morning because of frequent fog, which can obscure the view. Otherwise, it's worth it. The local fauna is truly beautiful.

Hiking Ella Rock was a real highlight of Sri Lanka. The hike can be started in Ella, with the train tracks offering the easiest route to the trail. There is a shorter and longer route, and the latter is definitely worth it. The trails are not well marked, so it's worth bringing a trail app to help guide you. At the top is a ticketed section (1000LKR / ~$3 / £2.50) to reach the five viewpoints, which is well worth it. It's great for pictures, or just sitting on the rocks looking out over the surrounding countryside.

Avoid going with Google map, use a trailing/hiking app or pay a local guide. Hike is beautiful and worth doing. There are nomad stands selling water, king coconuts and fruit juices near the top, which I personally don’t really like but which can be useful for some people: makes the hike easier and more pleasant. You need to pay to get to the top and see the views. 3rd view point is definitely worth the last walk

Ella Rock trail is an amazing hike with rewarding views. The trail passes through lush greenery, tea plantations, and forest paths, ending with a steep climb to the summit. The effort is worth it for the panoramic vistas of the surrounding hills and valleys. Start early to enjoy cooler weather and avoid crowds. The trail isn’t always well-marked, so bring a map or GPS. Friendly locals may offer guidance, but it’s easy to navigate on your own. A must-do for nature lovers and anyone visiting Ella.

Overpriced People at the station will try to tell you to go the wrong way so they guide you so check Google map to go the right way. The harder way is interesting though and you see a waterfall and walk through more tea plantations. Interesting hike, quite steep at the end but moderate difficulty. Viewpoints are OK, but not amazing enough to justify the 930 LKR price.
